Boroughs
of Bilbao
In 1300 Don Diego López de Haro read the foundational chart of the
Town of Bilbao in the Casco Viejo, next to the San Antón church. This
is still a very popular area today, and holds some of the city´s most
interesting sites: the cathedral, Plaza Nueva, San Antón church and
bridge and the Ribera market. The city´s expansion took it to the left
bank of the river, where we find areas like Abando – the modern city
centre –; the Indautxu shopping district; Begoña and its Virgen
de Begoña Basilica, home of the “amatxu” (mother) as she
is known to locals; and Deusto, where we find Bilbao´s most illustrious
university.
Abando
Runs from Arenal to the Palacio Euskalduna and Casa de la Misericordia. It
is one of the areas where the change brought by the “New Bilbao”
is most noticeable.
Casco Viejo
Origin of the city, its famous Seven Streets surround Bilbao´s cathedral
(better known as Catedral de Santiago).
Deusto
After crossing its eponymous bridge, this area founded in 1886 is home to
the Jesuit-run Deusto university.
Ensanche
Running from Plaza Circular to Sabino Arana avenue, the area holds some of
the more stately buildings and is the centre of the commercial activity.
Indautxu
Another important commercial and residential area, it runs from Plaza Indautxu
to La Casilla in the north, and Gran Vía to the south and Sabino Arana
in the east.
