Ski

Valdezcaray
One of the closest resorts to Bilbao is Ezcaray (La Rioja), offering 300 ha. of runs. To get there, take the Logroño motorway and exit in Santo Domingo de la Calzada; the resort is 12 Km from the town of Ezcaray.

Alto Campoo
Another resort easily accessible from Bilbao is Alto Campoo, in Cantabria. It has 27.5 Km of runs, and 5 Km of cross-country ski tracks. From Bilbao, take the Santander motorway; exit in Torrelavega, and continue to Reinosa, just before the resort.

Pirineos
The near-by Pyrenees is the main area for winter sports in Spain. There are four different geographical areas that are accessible from Bilbao, either from the Spanish or the French side: the Aragonés, Catalán, Andorran and French Pyrenees. The ones in the Aragonés Pyrenees are the closest to Bilbao on the Spanish side. The alpine ski resorts are all well equipped and maintained resorts, with ski schools for all ages and good apres-ski options and activities. The cross country ones tend to be basic.

Hillwalking
There are three areas with easy and clearly-marked routes near Bilbao:

Argalario
It is located in the left bank mining area. Take the N-634 towards Santander; in Retuerto, take the Mezpelerreka/El Regato direction, and follow the signs to Aragalario. The area, located in mount Mendibil, offers good views of the Txorierri valley and of the mining area.


La Arboleda/Zugaztieta
To access this circuit, also located in the mining area, take the BI-624 to Trapagaran, and follow the signs until you reach the top platform of La Reineta cable car. Here the circuit begins, among the remains of the mining past of the region.


Akarlanda
This park is located in Erandio, near Bilbao, and very popular with families in Spring and Summer. Take the BI-3704 towards Alto de Unbe; the park is past Leioa, near the university campus.

Mountaineering
Several mid-height mountain ranges near-by, make Bilbao an ideal place for climbing, trekking, mountain-bike, and other mountain sports.

There are several areas near Bilbao, among them:

Gorbeia Natural Park
The 1,480 m Gorbeia mountain marks the border between Bizkaia and Álava. The 18 m tall cross at the top is one of the most visited spots in the park. One of the park´s highlights is the Axina biotope, a karstic landscape with a 100 m water drop in Cascada de Gujuli.

The park is suited for rock climbing, trekking, mountain-bike, horse riding and other activities.

Montes de Ranero-Los Jorrios
It is located in the western part of Bizkaia, between Villaverde de Trucios and Karrantza. The mostly karstic landscape is crowned by the Armañón mountain, 854 m tall. Trekking, horse riding, rappel, mountain bike, espeleology can all be practised here.

The area also offers the opportunity to visit the Pozalagua caves in Karrantza, the animal park of El Karpín, and cultural sites in Balmaseda, like the Casa de Juntas of Avellaneda and the XII C. Muza bridge.

Urkiola
This natural park is named after the mountain port that crosses it north to south, and after the sanctuary located at its summit. Urkiola is characterised by its limestone rock formations, sharp cliffs and deep valleys. One of its highlights is the mythical Amboto mountain (1,328 m). Throughout, the park offers spectacular views of the different valleys and areas around it, like Otxandio, Durango, Elorrio.

Bicycle
There are three cycle paths in Bilbao (known as bidegorris), making cycling an alternative safe mode of transport to visit Bilbao. The first one runs from Campo Volantín (City Hall) to Sarriko, in Deusto, via Lehendakari Aguirre and Universidades avenues. The second starts at Paseo Uribitarte (City Hall) and ends in La Casilla, via Abandoibarra, Paseo José Anselmo Clavé and Doctor Areilza. The third one runs from Avenida Juan Antonio Zunzunegi to Parque Ametzola, via Avenida del Ferrocarril, crosses Autonomía, and continues on Dolores Ibarruri and Santiago Brouard streets.
