Atxondo valley route
Take the A-8 motorway towards San Sebastian, and exit in Durango, first stop
of this route. This historical town is surrounded by high mountains (about 1,000
m tall), that we will later visit in this route. Durango holds quite a few interesting
sites in its old town: the XVI C. Santa María church, the gothic Kurutziaga
cross, the City Hall, and Palacio Etxezarreta (XVIII C.), which houses the local
art and history museum.
We continue towards Abadiño, direction Elorrio. In Abadiño we
find the Muntsaratz tower. Right after this village, we take the turning to
Axpe and Arrazola, two hamlets located in the Atxondo valley; take a stroll
along the country paths to enjoy the sights.
The next stop is Elorrio, declared Monumental Artistic Site, for its numerous
palaces and grand houses, and where we will find La Concepción church
(XV C. gothic-renaissance), and the XVIII City Hall.
Our tour ends in the San Antonio sanctuary, at the top of the Urkiola port,
where we can enjoy outstanding sights if we take the mountain path towards the
top of the mountain.
